DIRECTION QUOTATIONS

- a report of the exact words used in a discourse
(e.g. Michael shouted, “I am a doofus!”)


When you repeat someone’s exact words, the repeated words are a direct quote. When you write, quotation marks (
“ ”) help identify and set off a quotation.

You begin with this quotation mark, with no space between it and the quote.



closing
quotation mark

You close with this quotation mark, with periods and commas ALWAYS inside the quotation. Other punctuation marks depend on the quote.
