You are to create a newspaper article (written in 3rd person AND past tense) about an imaginary event at SAS, in 5th grade, or in Mr. Kimzey’s classroom. Make the voice in your writing that of a newspaper reporter. You might even want to read your local newspaper for examples of proper voice and word choice.
A reporter must make sure that all the important information is included in a news story. There are questions that will help organize this information. They can be used as an outline or guide for taking notes and writing. The 5 W’s, WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHYand HOWcan be a reporter’s best friends!

| VOLCANO CAUSES SCHOOL FIRE By Doctor Sleuth SINGAPORE - A small fire was quickly extinguished in Professor Nasaldorf’s fifth grade classroom at the American school in Singapore on Wednesday, November 14th. The fire began during a demonstration of a model volcano built by a group of students: AlexS, RossR, StuartB, and TeaguenS. Fortunately, the demonstrators were prepared for just such an emergency and fast action with a bottle of water prevented a school-wide emergency. The paper-mâché model volcano was supposed to be covered with plaster of Paris to make it fireproof. However, a small section of exposed paper was concealed by the paint covering the model. This ignited when the hot ashes created by the chemicals used to “erupt” the volcano realistically spewed down the mountainside. “It’s important to be prepared,” commented Professor Nasaldorf. “I plan to screen science projects more closely in the future. I know Mr. Kimzey would not overlook such things. I just hope he will continue to let me substitute for him, as I love to teach. He has the best students.” Mr. Kimzey could not be located for comment. Only a desk and a few carpet tiles were destroyed by the incident. Ms. DeGroot, the principal of Intermediate School, said the repairs should be completed over the weekend. |
Remember, newspaper articles do not use first person. They are written in third person: he, she, they. Avoid phrases with I, we, and our, unless they are within quotes. You want the voice of your article to sound like a newspaper reporting the facts, not that of student at our school telling a story.
Newspaper articles are very specific however. Whenever possible, they replace third person pronouns with proper nouns and/or specific information: i.e., Professor Nasaldorf, Mr. Kimzey, Mr. Kimzey's classroom, American school in Singapore, Wednesday, November 14th.
Newspaper articles are written in PAST TENSE.

KatieM dumped StuartB's and AlexS's waterbabies on their chairs and put the other containers on Mr.Kimzey's desk. When Mr.K came back, he was furious! KatieM became a hero, but JuliaV, AlexS, StuartB, and ClaudiaK were sent to clean the bathrooms for an entire week. |

WHO GETS TO KEEP ANTONIO?
SINGAPORE: It was a fine Valentines Day, when everyone should have been sharing treats, but a group of kids were not sharing treats, they were sharing an invisible Antonio. This was all Meg.S and KatieQ's idea. They were tired today, so they asked who wants to babysit Antonio for today only. Three kids, JuliaV, yonjoo, and ShivL, wanted to. Then, they got into a fight. "Everybody knows that I am the most beautiful girl in the class, so I NEED TO keep Antania." yonjoo bragged. "Well, everybody knows that I am the most nicest girl in the class, so I MUST keep Antaniaolina," Julia bragged. "Everybody knows that I'm the only boy that has a twin sister that is more wiser than me, so I HAVE TO keep Antioniely." ShivL bragged. Meg.S hesitated. "It's Antonio, people, Antonio." SINGAPORE- On Wednesday, October the 24, nine students, StuartB, KatieQ, YonJooK, NititaM, WilsonL, AustinH, StevenL, JuliaV and ClaudiaL, skipped school on the same day. They all went to the same place, it was StevenL’s birthday party. Steven thought that that day was a Saturday. “I truthfully forgot all about school,” Steven complained on the day after his birthday party, “My real birthday is sometime in the summer. I have know idea why I wanted my birthday party in October.”
Steven's mother was in Hawaii when all of this happened. His father didn't know about it either, but when we asked the students that where invited, they said that when they RSVPed to come to StevenL's party, it was his mother on the phone.
No one has any idea how StevenL managed his party, but the people who attended thought that it was the party of the year.

Teacher Throws Cat From Moving Bus
It was a normal typical day like any other on May 21, the kids wrote there HomeEd assignments, packed up and headed for their bus. They just sat and stared out the window absentmindedly. The big roar and rumble came from beneath the bus, it was about to head out and down to the houses, apartments etc. All of a sudden the doors flew open. In came a tall figure, it was Mr. Kimzey. He scrambled to find an empty seat. One kid quotes that he saw a big lump in his Prada bag, but no one would know for sure if it was true or not, so you just have to take his word for it. The bus started chugging down the hill. What happened next was not too clear, but it sounded something like a zip, a hiss, a loud screech, and the sound of a window opening. All of a sudden with a strong throw a cat was flying through the air. At once Mr. Kimzey looked at the peoples wide eyes of terror and surprise, and said, "oops?" When that happened all the buses stopped. It appears that Mr. Kimzey's car apparently "broke down" so he took the bus. That explains why he was on the bus, but why did he have a cat. For now Mr. Kimzey has been in custody for nearly a week, yet he refuses to speak. More details when he does. ----------------------------------------------------

TEACHER FLUSHES STUDENT DOWN TOILET
Mr. Kimzey's class was having having a pretty normal day on November 18. It all started in the afternoon while the class was having a bathroom break. Apparently, Mr. Kimzey, a fifth grade teacher at the Singapore American School, has flushed his student, AaronL, down the toilet. Luckily, Lund was was found in the gutter on Victoria Road. He was sent to the hospital to have a checkup straight away.
It seems like Kimzey has once been dunked in the toilet by Lund.
From that day on, Kimzey has always wanted revenge on Lund. Lund quotes, "I didn't mean to dunk him down the toilet, he picks on me everyday! " Kimzey ran away after the situation. Mr. Henrietaflamorzinger Danzingger, Mr. Henry for short, reported bumping to him on High Street while returning home from work. "He was in quite a hurry, knocked my briefcase on the floor, didn't even say sorry! " Danzingger remembers.
The FBI has been around to his house and to all the places he was reported seen. Unfortunately, there was no sign of him. There has been rumors that he had escaped to Spain, but no one knows for sure.

"I knew I had to inform the police as I heard a loud scream from the top." A photo was taken as they saw Jon falling with nothing to prevent this horrifying death for Jon. Nobody knew that this was probably the end for Jon and Mr. K. Mr. K Escaped Again
Mr. K had escaped thanks to the help of the criminal WilsonL. JunMinA and MattM was playing when suddenly this disaster of the two criminals had spread throughout the world. WilsonL had made fun of everybody while Mr.K ran off to who knows where? "Mr.K stole another shuttle and blasted off before me and MattM could catch him." JunMinA told the police. The two criminals called themselves the KW. This confused everybody because there was a famous site called Kimzey Wiki which also stands for KW. Everyone lived in fear of nonstop criminal activities. Lier, Lier, Pants on Fire!
Canada- "And that is why BananaB is so unhappy. Tune in Canadian News Network again next Wednesday!" Meg.S, KatieQ, and AntonioS shut the TV off, then hurried to the Saint Kim Hospital to see the guy that was hit by the Rubber Tree, AaronL. Once they got there, the Accountant, RossR, smiled at them. "Are you here to see AaronL?" He asked. "Yes, now let us in!" Meg.S screamed in RossR's ear. "OK." He opened the door. "Go straight, turn left, and find Room number 929." He pointed the way. KatieQ squished RossR as she passed him, and AntonioS jammed RossR, too. The three kids found room 929, opened it, and saw AaronL. They ran to him. Two people, HualinS and LemonC, were asking him a bunch of questions. Just then, YonJooK, the doctor, and the nurses, MattM, JunMinA, KrabbyR, and KickK, ran up to AaronL and got out a knife. "Aaaaaaaaaaaaah!" AaronL ran out the door. YonJooK looked confused. HualinS spoke, "He's a lier." ----------------------------------------------------

DAYCARE SUCKS
SINGAPORE- Six friends, JunMinA, AaronL, Meg.S, RossR, YonJooK, and HualinS were going to Antarctica for Summer Break. They thought that in Summertime, it's hot everywhere. Even Antarctica! There were only six tickets left, and because that they were selfish, they thought about themselves, and not their imaginary friends. KickK, KrabbyR, AntonioS, LemonC, MattM and BananaB were sent to "M.A.G.N.I.F.I.C.E.N.T.," a day-care for only imaginary friends. (My Aroma Gecko Nephew's Icicle Crane Et Now-Time.) I know, a weird name. The day-care lady, NikitaM, just got hit by a bus three days ago. So she's really unhappy. But the six friends didn't know that, and they begged NikitaM to take care of their imaginary friends. "Sure thing!" NikitaM's sad face faded. "Everything will be fine with me. Even if they got mental problems or something. Hayayayayayaya!" Her laugh frightened HualinS, who shuddered. Three weeks after that, the six friends came home. When they got to the day-care, the day-care lady spoke in a frightened voice, "your friends got eaten by a beast, and that beast is ME! Hayayayayaya!" Everyone but Meg.S gasped. She asked, "how does that "ME" person look like? Hayayayaya? Come on, answer me!" The day-care lady smiled. "You fell for my trick, didn't you? Here's your friends, and the total is, $3,000 because each week is $1000 dollars here." "Gack!" YonJooK fainted. ----------------------------------------------------

While crowds were chearing the underground began to shake as a battle was raging between Wilson and Jun MIn. Wilson's nuclear ray was to make a shield around Earth so nobody could come out or in and anyone trying to kill him was destroyed. Contestants flew to the audience and protected them from harm as they used their flying pokemon. Fissures were created around the world and even volcanoes and the seas caused destruction! Yesterday at the stadium Linda's 49th battle was interrupted by the sound from the President of the U.S.A. Now the president is RossR as his smartness can lead into safety for all people. It souned that from now on, that the two people JunMinA and WilsonL are both banned as JunMinA made the sacrifice. The sacrifice to get banned and also ban wilson. People thought this was fair and appointed a new worthy person. MattM was very happy to accept taking his friend's place and was greeted with the cheers from the crowds. Linda's battle continued. Linda just won her 50th battle when the champion of Kanto, Champion Gary, wanted to battle. They both used a water type. ----------------------------------------------------

Mr.K Helps Jun MinA and MattM Write Fake Reports
Mr.K, a teacher, has teamed up on Jun MinA and MattM's side even though both of them is dead because of their death penelty. Mr.K has done the same thing as Jun MinA and MattM has done to try to get WilsonL in jail, which is write fake reports about themselves and WilsonL. Jun MinA, MattM and Mr.K knows that they are guilty but they want WilsonL to take the blame and get sent into jail. This event happened right after the death penelty of MattM. Mr.K already knows that Jun MinA and MattM is dead so Mr.K wanted revenge on WilsonL. The punishment for Mr.K is again a lifetime of jail because Mr.K had somehow managed to escape from jail again. The fake report Mr.K wrote says that Jun MinA wrote this report but this is not true. Everybody has agreed to all this and they should NEVER beleive a single thing in Mr.K's reports.

South Africa Trouble!
SINGAPORE- SAS students (5th graders) were going on a field trip to South Africa. One group going there is called Team Adventures. That team includes KatieM, HualinS, StuartBa, and RossR. They all belonged in Mr. Kimzey's class. But, there were rumors about that AaronL, because he dissapeared from Saint Kim Hospital, so most people thinks that he is dead, but he might not be! The four kids got to South Africa, and the first thing they did was: VISIT THE ZOO! They saw a lot of animals, but when they went to the monkey stand, there was one who didn't look like the others. StuartBa gasped. "AARONL! What are you doing here?" It was AaronL!
So AaronL was taken back into Mr. Kimzey's class, SAS. Because that Mr. Kimzey was so proud, he let the HualinS get the chair for a week, KatieM go the Sizzle and Not be knocked down for a week, StuartBa sit next to him for a week, and RossR pick the order of the subjects of the day for a week. Oh! And, AaronL go to purple for the rest of the school year.

I don't know why I didn't start a thread about this earlier!
Why is my article at the very top of the list? I didn't put it there. And why is it in two colums and says, "By City Editor SamanthaD?" Did someone put that there? Mr. K? Are you behind this?
