Elizabeth George Speare


Elizabeth George Speare was born in Melrose, Massachusetts, on November 21, 1908. She lived in New England for most of her life. Even though she loved to travel, she spent most of her life on the east coast of the United States.

Elizabeth's first published work was a magazine article about skiing with children. Elizabeth loved to see children learn that writing is FUN. Ms. Speare discoverd her gift of writing at age eight and began composing stories while in high school. She has won many awards for her books, including two Newbery Medals. She is one of the Educational Paperback Association top authors and has been called one of America's most popular author.

Ms. Speare is one great author. She wrote many books that are loved by kids of all ages, all over the world. Her first novel was called Calico Captive. Elizabeth's second novel, The Witch of Blackbird Pond, was a great success. She received the Newbery Medal for her books The Witch of Blackbird Pond in 1959 and The Bronze Bow 1962.

Sadly, she died on Nov. 15, 1994 of aortic aneurysm at age 85.
